Details of the Regiment were placed on active service on 01 September 1939 for local protective duty. The Regiment mobilized the 2nd Canadian Motorcycle Regiment, C.A.S.F. (G.G.H.G.) on 24 May 1940. On 09 February 1941 the Regiment was redesignated The Governor General's Horse Guards and on 11 February 1941 it was conerted to armour and redesignated the 3rd Armoured Regiment (The Governor General's Horse Guards). It formed a part of 2nd Armoured Brigade of 5th Canadian Armoured Division. It embarked for the United Kingdom on 09 October 1941. As a result of the reorganization of Canadian armoured formations in early 1943, the Regiment was converted to an armoured reconnaissance regiment and redesignated the 3rd Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment (The Governor General's Horse Guards) and remained with 5th Canadian Armoured Division. It landed in Italy on 19 December 1943 and moved to North-West Europe on 16 February 1945. The active unit was disbanded on 31 January 1946. A 3rd (Reserve) Armoured Regiment (The Governor General's Horse Guards) served in the Reserve Army. |
